On Green Island

A small, well not actually small, more of a medium size, girl tossed in her sleep. The night was dark, the hour late, the moon dim behind high clouds flowing along in the cold jetstream winds like thoughts whirling around in an old bottle. A somewhat milder breeze from the nearby bay caused the branches of the big old maple outside the window of her small but much loved bedroom to scratch at the windows a bit; this happened often, usually she slept through such small disturbances without even being aware of them, tonight she was restless. In her dream she heard a barking dog in the distance, a familiar barking dog, but in her dream she did not recognize the animal, only that the barking was angry, warning, one, two, three times, and then stopped, suddenly. She almost woke then, eyelids fluttering, but was too close to the deep REM sleep and not close enough to the end of the dream, and soon she was deep asleep again, searching for the dog somewhere in a black night in a place she did not know, because she knew the dog was her friend and if the dog was trying to warn her of trouble she must go to it, it was all confused as dreams are, but the message was also swirling around somewhere in the air of the dark night and she sensed it was an important message.

And soon another sound came into her dreams, the scraping sound of an old window no longer well-fitted being slowly lifted. Another familiar sound, causing her to turn once and then back again in her small bed. Some seconds after the first window sound there was a muffled sort of thudding sound, and the sound of another voice, a human voice this time, a somewhat uncontrolled but whispered exclamatory angry grunting sound like a frustrated stupid animal might make, a pig trying to get to some food and finding the way blocked or something, and this time the girl did wake up, her eyes snapping open, turning immediately as they always did to the one place there might be a source of dim light from a moon or from one of the yard lights that were usually on all night to get her bearings. But there was something blocking the window, a shape, the shape moved as she looked and then stopped, she saw it was a human shape, and then it moved again, covering the short distance from the window to her bed in two quick silent steps, evidently seeing the reflection of the yard light in her open eyes as she saw the same reflection in the eyes of the figure as it looked towards her shape in the bed. She had time to take a quick deep breath to scream for her mother, but not time to let the scream out before a heavy black hand covered her mouth. The hand held a cloth with a funny, sweetish sort of smell, a very strong smell, and it was no more than a few short seconds before the girl's eyes blinked rapidly a few times, then closed once again and she dreamed no more and knew no more.

NUNS (Nordic Union News Service) - The long-awaited event finally arrived today, as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Lapland, Greenland and Iceland formally announced their economic and political union. The various states will still retain considerable autonomy, but a Nordic Parliament has also been established, through which they will act on many matters in cooperation. "There are two primary objectives here," said Ms Erica Groland, Swedish Prime Minister and first Interim President of the new union, "First, we were unhappy with many of the newer economic objectives of the EU, which seemed to be going in the same direction as the US and Canada, countries like that, using rather invalid economic excuses to take power away from the people and making business profits the official purpose of government, with many added detrimental effects on the security and wellbeing of the citizens overall - we feel quite differently here, we feel that the wellbeing of the majority of the citizens who do the actual work to create and maintain our society should be paramount over the business interests of the wealthy few who have been lucky enough to amass wealth in our society. Also, we were and are all very unhappy about the so-called "war on terrorism" that has been propagated by many countries, led of course by the United States and Great Britain - these people seem to feel that they can fight whatever terrorism there is in the world by brute force, while many others, us included, feel that such a course just increases violence and instability in the world, which may be of considerable benefit for the US and British arms industries, and others, but not so good for the majority of average citizens of the world who only suffer when people whose minds could barely conceive of a spear are given modern weapons of mass destruction such as AK-47s and turned loose on people who desire only peace. We feel that the roots of terrorism lie in poverty and disempowerment and power struggles among those who would be kings, and eradicating these scourges from the planet is the proper path to take."

Ms Groland had much more to say, particularly about the establishment of a small but ultra-modern NU Viking Peace Force and the beginning of a serious war on global climate change and those most responsible - see our full report tomorrow.

Witness Umbala-Shivea- to Galactic Development Council:

Look, you guys, I know about the non-intervention policy and all that crappola, but I really think you should check this out - the proto-humanoids have put up a pretty good fight here on this planet in the face of some pretty serious resistance - there's a lot of good souls here, but the retro-reptilian strain seems to be on the verge of wiping them out (along with everything else, of course). We're running out of planets, you know, at least in this part of this universe, and I know there's been quite a bit of controversy in SOME circles at least over some of the other races we’ve let perish because they couldn't overcome this universal hereditary conundrum of having a consciousness built on the pure survival proto-human-reptile instinct-based CNS that pretty much invariably precedes it as a necessary evolutionary step out of the mire etc. But these guys are SOOOOO close, and if you really want to add to the number of 'sentient' races in this galaxy, as you keep saying you do, I think just a SMALL intervention might not be out of place here, regulations or laws notwithstanding - ya gotta remember, we wrote em we can change em, eh?

I really do recommend it - the bad ones here are really bad, no argument, par for the course in these situations, and we sure as hell don't want them running around intergalactically trying to do to everyone else what they do to one another here. Howsomever, I think, speaking honestly, part of my reason for recommending this intervention is that this is surely one of the most beautiful planets we have found, and the psychotic reptilians in their usual completely out-of-control, no-thought-for-the-future way are probably going to destroy it if we do not intervene - and the good ones, it seems to this observer, seem to have the potential to be really good, which is also part of the classic pattern, as you know, such a fine line between the Dark and the Light, the cusp in situations like this always seems to be like a spinning coin on a table, we can never tell which way it will fall. We've lost races like this before when the GDC dicked around until the decision was made for them by the race in question, or at least the craziest individuals thereof, who managed to unleash some sort of planet-destroying holocaust, which some of the reptilian-brain-dominated rulers here appear to be capable of and close to doing rather than relinquish control, and I really think we ought to at least give the good ones here, who have fought so long and well, a chance to get on to the next stage and see what they can do - we can always let them go later if we have to, if the reptilian influence proves too strong.

I await your instructions -

PROVINCE OF Prince Edward Island, CANADA

BETWEEN : Brittany S. Black (nee Forrest) (Applicant)
AND : Joseph C. Black (Respondent)

Delivered from the hand of Justice Arthur X. Campbell
Dated this 14th of August, 19XX

The Court finds as follows:

1. The contestants were legally married in Toronto on March 21 1989

2. For several years they appeared to have had a happy, even ideal, marriage, with the Defendant working as a lawyer with the firm of Black, MoreBlack and Geezushowblackcanyouget, a leading law firm in Ontario with branches throughout Canada and closely aligned with large firms in other countries, especially the Beelzebub et Fils Satanic Law Franchise of the USA, and quickly, through exceptional natural talent, rising to the position of Partner in that firm, and the Applicant foregoing a promising career in Science Journalism to bear and raise children and be a Society Wife.

3. Although the Defendant denied it, this court finds the evidence compelling that he began a sexual affair with a junior lawyer in one of his firm's subsidiary offices here in Prince Edward Island, and carried on that affair for several years, thus creating an Irreconcilable Difference between himself and the Applicant, once she learned of this betrayal and the Defendant's disinclination even then to end his extramarital affair. There were various other allegations of marital problems, but nothing conclusively proven on either side.

4. Issue from the union was one child, a girl. The court finds that given the apparent lack of contrition concerning his infidelity of the husband, the Defendant in this hearing, the child will be awarded to the sole custody of the mother, the Applicant, with certain visiting rights to the Defendant as set out in Annex 89 of this document.

5. Considering the relative situations financially of the Contestants in this matter, and considering that the Applicant willingly sacrificed several of the most productive working years of her life to raising the child and maintaining the home of the Defendant, and considering the Supplications of both parties, the court hereby awards the main residence of the couple in Toronto to the Defendant, Joseph Black, and the summer residence of the couple, known as Greenways, located in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada, as described more precisely in Annex 65, to the Applicant, Brittany Forrest. All other properties of the contestants to be divided as per the Separation Agreement, Annex 312 to this document. Child support payments shall be addressed following submissions from the counsels.

June 21 2xxx - New Island Government - maybe...
Dateline Charlottetown

Future uncertain - possible TERRORIST connections to new government....

Islanders this morning wake up not sure who their next government will be. For the first time in the history of the Island, no clear winner has been selected by the voters, with the Liberals and PCs both receiving 7 seats, the NDP 5, and the so-called "Independent" candidates being elected in 10 ridings. There was widespread speculation last night that the Independents and NDP would form a coalition, but developments overnight make that eventuality less certain. 'We're still looking into our options at the moment,' Liberal Party spokesperson Clarity Bell said in an interview, 'but it would seem that with less than 50% of Island voters supporting these Independents, they have no clear mandate to form a government, and, as you know, between the Liberals and Conservatives we have over 50% of the vote, so we are considering what arrangements might be made to give Islanders the government they voted for. There are also a number of irregularities we are looking into concerning the election, even possible Terrorist Connections we have just learned about, questionable financial deposits and so on, but I don't want to comment on that now.'

The Colonial was unable to contact Mr Stephen Bigelow, the acting leader of the Independents, for comment, but Loftusmusmus Garrullouspuspus, a Political Science Professor at UPEI, said that the allegations of 'terrorist connections' were just too ludicrous to comment on, and also that it was more than a little hypocritical for the Liberals or Conservatives to be complaining that the Independents and NDP did not have 50% of the vote, since majority-of-seats governments with less than a majority of the votes were quite a common result of First Past the Post (FPTP) elections, as are held in Canada - indeed, very few majority governments in the country have ever received a plurality of the votes, according to Garrullouspuspus. "Even though we have been trying to get the governments here to institute a more fair Proportional Representation system for years now, they have always resisted, and one of their main arguments has been the presence of a strong majority government, even lacking a plurality of votes - so it is a bit hypocritical, to say the least, to hear them complaining as they are now. They have had plenty of time, both parties, in power, to change the system, and have always chosen not to, as long as it was working in their favor. However, they should be relieved - it was, as you will recall, one of the main campaign promises of all of the Independents, and the NDP as well, to institute a new electoral system based on PR, so in the future the Liberals and Conservatives both will be treated more fairly - indeed, it is their own strategists and policy makers they ought to be complaining to, for if they had of gotten off their behinds at any time in the last 20 years and rewritten the electoral laws as they were repeatedly asked to, they would not now be in this position. But as we so often see, those most anxious to throw blame around rarely look where they ought to look first - in a mirror. hoho."

The strange, very unexpected results can be explained to some extent by voter dissatisfaction with the Liberals, with recent spending irregularities exposed involving several overseas 'meetings', and the rather large salary, benefits and pension increase they gave themselves last year (while, as usual, telling the provincial employees there was "just no money" for small raises they had been expecting which had been cancelled). Several other issues appeared to be making for many unhappy voters, such as the cancellation of the dental pre-school program, which angered many; the recent shameful exhibition of 'pass-the-buck'-ism of both major parties concerning the collapse of the Northumberland Strait lobster fishery which left a bad taste in the mouths of many voters as well, and an assortment of lesser issues could be mentioned as well, all of which were contributing to considerable voter unhappiness at this point in time. Pre-writ polls indicated that the voters were mainly upset at the idea that the Liberals were performing inferior work but awarding themselves superior pay and hefty raises for that incompetence and malfeasance - and by the election of a new PC leader only a few months ago, Stanley Newconrightwingwacko, whose somewhat conservative ideas concerning privatized health care and cutting taxes for the wealthy and UI for the unemployed, seem to have spooked some of the traditional PC support they might normally have expected as people looked around for a change of government - most Islanders are rather attached to both the healthcare system and unemployment insurance, both of which policies Mr. Newconrightwingwacko referred to as unnecessary drains on the public purse and encouraging a 'culture of dependency', and programs the Island simply could not afford, in this era of increased shareholder activism and obscene bank profits - "And, as we all know," he said on one CBC interview, "you’d have to be crazy to get the banks mad at you hahahaha!" - well, Mr. Newconrightwingwacko, perhaps it's not such a great idea, in retrospect, to get Islanders mad at you either. Hahahaha. Mr. Newconrightwingwacko, who is not a native Islander but comes from Ontario or some place in Upper Canada and whose last job was with the Constant Republican Alliance Party (frequently referred to by the less polite as the 'CRAP-pers'), was last seen packing his bags - rumors of financial irregularities have surfaced around his name also during the last couple of days, and he apparently has little desire to remain in PEI after having been rather soundly defeated (along with Liberal George Wevebeenonthetakeforfuckingeversuckershahaha) by Dobie 'Duckling' Swale, the NDP candidate in Charlottetown Central where they competed with one another.

So the Liberals and Conservatives, splitting the traditional Island vote fairly evenly, each wound up with some 30% of the vote, and evidently this left the door open just wide enough for the NDP-Independent coalition to sneak in, using a tactic never before seen in Canada - something they called 'strategic voting' - if the NDP had a strong candidate in a riding, the Independents supported that candidate rather than running against him or her, and likewise, where the Independent candidate was perceived to be strong, the NDP did not run anyone, but supported and worked for the Independent. The coalition also used an innovative internet campaign due to a shortage of money, which seems to have been surprisingly effective.

The strategies that defeated the traditional parties did not sit well with the Liberal or Conservative party strategists, or a number of influential Island pundits. "Where the hell do they get off playing these kind of 'away' tricks here on our beautiful PEI, I’d like to know," wrote Candidate Freddy 'Puffpuffy' MacDonald the day before the election, "they all ought to be driven to the far side of the Confederation Bridge and dumped in New Brunswick if they don’t like the way we do things here - it's worked great for the last 100 years or whatever, and there's no place for these newfangled ideas here, in my opinion. There’s a lot of us out here who think that kind of stuff is just plain cheating, and we're looking into legal ways to see if we can do something about it. I know many Islanders are as outraged as we are that these CFA losers chose to take advantage of our great democratic system this way, and we really think maybe they ought to be disenfrenched or whatever it was Uncle 'JB' Johnny said - just like the damned French, sorry, don't publish that, ok?"

Apparently quite a few PEI voters disagreed. Said Garrullouspuspus in a last word, "I can’t imagine why I haven't heard MacDonald complaining like this before, when it is common for federal governments to get a majority of seats with well under any sort of majority of the votes because the parties opposing them split the vote."

It should be an interesting time ahead for all of us.

Report of the Legislative Committee on a New Electoral System for Prince Edward Island
March 12 1989

(excerpt from Executive Summary)

"..... although many excellent submissions were made on the various forms of a voting system known as 'proportional representation' - indeed, 24 of 27 submissions recommended this - we in the Committee feel that since such a system is currently in place in no other province in Canada, or federally, it is not the position of Prince Edward Island to lead the way with such radical changes to our traditional ways of doing things, which have served us, we all believe, admirably well to this point in our history....."

Just, of course, coincidentally, Mr. MacPicklehead was a fundamentalist himself. In the way of things on the Island, the teacher lost his job, spent years fighting it in court and never won anything but lots of grief and white hair, while Mr. MacPicklehead went on to become the Mayor of Charlottetown. SUBJ: Fifth column in Cdn left?!?!?

To Good Canadian Rubbles, Island Rebel Rousers - and anyone else who says they speak for, or provide a forum for, 'progressives' in Canada (that is to say, those whose allegiance lies somewhere besides the 'PC'-Lib tweedledee-dum corporate governments we have been living under for the last 20 years in this country):

Well, we've recently had ANOTHER disastrous election in Canada (as defined by renewed 'mandate' for corporate government with the support of maybe 25% of Canadians...) - that's at least 7 in the last 20 years just federally since this country really started on the skids - and what are you all doing, what are you recommending, to try and improve our chances in the next election, which is going to be coming up fairly quickly given the minority government, probably within a year, almost certainly no more than two?

Diddly squat, as far as I can see - which makes me question your actual commitment to change in this country, which is NOT going to happen spontaneously like some act of god or because the Bay St Boys wake up some morning after a Scrooge experience of some sort, realized the error of their ways and give us our country back. We the People will get control of our country when we TAKE control of it - and we will not EVER do so by sitting around between elections twiddling our thumbs or whatever and hoping for something better the next time by doing the same stuff we did last year, and the election before that, and the election before that, etc and etc. (I hardly need point out that is one workable definition of 'being out of touch with reality' to put it politely - continually doing the same thing while hoping for a different outcome...)

If I was a fifth columnist of some sort in Canada, working for Tom daQizling and the CCCE and the bankers etc, what you folks are doing is about exactly what I would want done - don't actually suppress anything - the mainstream media is tightly controlled, but in a 'democracy' we must not be seen actively shutting people up - so give the people who are unhappy about things, who have some understanding of what is going on, a few places to bitch to one another on the net (this is also quite helpful in identifying those the corps-bankers et al need to be most worried about, in case roundup day ever comes as well), but make sure they don't organize in any way that might actually threaten us in the next election. Nobody even TALKS about organizing effectively here - for some reason I had the metaphor of a bunch of bad guys that we want to get rid of living on the moon - and through various wiles they've got us all talking about the best kind of submarine to build - or whether or not we even need a submarine - if we just wish and hope hard enough, the bad guys will go away - and look at this interesting article on bad guys on Pluto dear - what a bunch of crazy conspiracy theorists they all are! hahahaha - I'd be a great fifth columnist! And oddly enough, I have written several letters like this over the years to various 'progressive' mags - and they won't publish the letters. Man, if I was a conspiracy theorist there'd be some pretty fertile ground around here hahaha.

Unfortunately, I actually care about Canada and the dream this country once represented, and I think a lot of others do to, and my dream is to get rid of the bad guys here, and get this country back on track to what it could and should be, for We the People - and not only in Canada, but in other countries around the world who are not as advanced as we once were - we could and should be a leader for such places - but first we have to get our own boat back in our own hands. And I know that dreaming and complaining is not going to do the trick - it's going to take a lot of work and effort and commitment from a lot of people, over quite a lot of time - and I do not see that effort happening, and I do not see anyone AT ALL pushing for this work to get underway. Which makes me wonder .....

(Wait wait wait, I hear the protests, we have the NDP for that! - well, the NDP is the best of the major parties, but they still have a lot of baggage and a lot of problems - i.e. the refusal of the NDP Ontario government to honor certain promises about fighting NAFTA, and their refusal to work with the Liberals federally with some form of strategic voting to defeat that same thing in 1988, and other times, their refusal to negotiate with many other progressive groups about any kind of coalition to attract the many Canadians who are unhappy with all 3 of the main parties - it seems the NDP sees themselves as the bastion of progressivism in Canada, and won't talk to anyone else - making them a part of the problem, in many ways, not the solution - certainly anything such as I propose here would have to include many people who have been NDP supporters - but only if they get off their high horse a bit and agree to talk, rather than insist on trying to dictate...)

What we need to do if we ever want to dethrone the corporate elite who are currently ruling our country in their best interests and quite contrary to the best interests of We the People will not be easy - indeed, it may well be impossible, the Titanic may already be fatally holed and we just don't realized it, although I am not ready to give up yet - but one thing is for sure - as they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and that first step must be taken if we are to have any hope of completing the journey - and that first step is in the direction of working together to get rid of the bad guys - not EVER in history has a well-organized power been brought to its knees by a herd of small bands acting independently - and organized and concerted effort is the only way (and the sooner everyone gets that figured out the sooner it will happen). And if I might add my own caveat to that - that first step must be taken while there is still enough life left in the old body to complete the journey. We are getting perilously close to fascism in this country, as our 'leaders' push for national citizen ID cards, increased secret police powers and secret trials, and media becomes ever more right wing in perspective, and an ever closer alliance to the point of complete subservience with the great fascist power to the south of us, at which time it may well be too late to even start let alone finish the journey we need - it is far, far easier to sink/be thrust into barbarism through apathy ('Politics is so boring!') or stupidity ('Oh pshaw that could never happen here!') than to crawl back out of the barbarous pit. Ask the people, for instance, who lived in Hitler's Germany - sad we should forget that so quickly, even as we celebrate from the other side the people who put an end to that horror. The Germans in the 1930s, according to all reports, never thought such a thing could happen either, thought Mr Hitler was doing just a fine job for them all.

But what have 'We the People' - the Canadian 'left' or 'progressives' - been doing in the several months now since the last election, when every day is precious with the minority government open to falling any time, to try and see that after the next election we have something to cheer about, some sign of progress on this journey? Nothing!!! Same old same old!!! - searching out thoughtful little articles about what the bad people are up to and sending them around our email lists about what we might like to see, or writing our own little outraged commentaries on the same things, always speaking to the converted, as it were, sharing our little smug superiorities - same as last year, and the year before, and the year before. And next year, or the year after, when the next election rolls around - once again we'll see a whole herd of disorganized, unprepared, underfunded, largely unknown small groups saying why we should not vote for Party A or Party B - but have nothing at all to offer the Canadian voter as a coordinated, widespread viable option with a solid vision to vote for instead (it's become very obvious over the last couple of decades that Canadians don't put much store in fringe parties that spring up like daisies around election time, and fade into the woodwork between elections) - so Canadian voters will once again either stay home in disgust or hopelessness as they’ve been increasingly doing or, if sufficiently scared of something like TweedleCon becoming governor of the 51st American state, vote for the lesser of evils available to them, and back will come TweedleLib. What a way to be governed - the lesser of evils - wouldn't it be a great change to have a government most of us actually liked????

And once again the corps - very well organized, always, with their TweedleLib-Cons and political strategies and bags of money and media control - will win, and We the People will lose. Once again. We don't have many strikes left in this old ball game before it's called for lack of opposition and/or hope. When they come for the good Rev Neimuller (Canadian version), and he calls for help - there won't be anyone left to help anymore.

This gets so frustrating, to see it year after year after year, election after election after election - doesn't anybody out there actually CARE about this country enough to DO something to save it????? Something more than sitting in front of the computer reading and writing clever little diatribes about this or that thing that the corps are getting up to?

Why oh why can't all the Canadians who want to create a decent country here start working TOGETHER to achieve that goal - which, I suspect, would be very achievable if we could just do this working together thing for awhile to chase that vision, that dream, in a serious fashion?? It seems that most Canadians are not very enamored with the New World Order cum Corporate Globalisation as promoted in Canada by the media and the Fraserball etc institutes and the financial lobby groups and their political voices, the Libs or the New Republicans (I will not call them any sort of Conservative Party - that once-honorable title belongs to people ranging from MacDonald to Diefenbaker to Stanfield, any of whom would be happy, I have little doubt, to shoot traitors like Muldooble and Hoople and the rest or at least banish them south where they belong) - and would jump to any kind of organized, Pro-Canada and Canadians party (really PRO-Canada - as in not in name only to hide other motives, witness Hoopleshrub's gang stealing the PC party name etc) - but they have shown over and over again that they will not jump in any useful numbers to the ragtag bunch of fringe options they hear bits and pieces of during the election campaigns dominated by the Bay St parties (and their media of course gatekeeping the info Canadians get) - they would have to see a coordinated opposition in place for a long period of time before the election, learn to know and trust the people in that movement, and learn about the policies it would put before them - it would take quite a long time, because obviously the mainstream media will NOT give such a movement any publicity at all, so we would have to work through slower channels. Which means starting NOW! - not when the election is called.

And that is what all you people who operate our major 'non-right-wing-whacko' websites should be doing - telling your readers, the progressives, to GET ORGANISING!!! - in villages and towns and cities all across Canada, get information available that exposes the Bay St globalists, have small meetings in kitchens or church basements, talk to people, explain to them why voting for either the Libs or Hoople is a BAD idea, and start to build some local support for independent alternatives - talk about this, discuss how having a whole lot of independents in the House of Commons could work FOR Canadians, and how the whole party system really works against us all, as they are all controlled from the top down by the corps etc - it couldn't be much worse, with the Doople and Hoople people working AGAINST Canadians and for the corps. This kind of thing takes time - Canadians have been brainwashed for a long time NOT to think about some things, and not to question many other things - but I think now they are seeing a lot of discrepancies in what they have been trained and are ready for some alternative views - but it takes time to discard long-held beliefs - FAR more time than the few frantic weeks of an election campaign.

You and others like you should be providing a meeting and discussion place for everyone, and all kinds of information for this kind of process, information people could copy and print to distribute - well-sourced info as well as opinion. The people get the corporate propaganda every day from multiple sources - that has to be counteracted. People hear a thousand times a year about how wonderful 'free trade' is, in many diverse ways - if they only hear once a year that there might be problems with 'free trade' - there's no question what 'meme' is going to dominate their thinking.

We need to be out there, now and every day, in every community - NOT preaching to the converted on email lists and reading friendly websites, but talking to people who are not that happy with the current state of affairs, but don't use the internet much and don't have any regular sources of alternative info. If we want to change things in Canada, we have to be that alternative source of info - hundreds and then thousands of us, all across the country, every day, every day doing some little thing to reach out to people, to bring them aboard this journey for a truly better, truly free Canada.

What we need to be ready to offer in the next election is a loose coalition of Independents, whose only uniting principle is that they do NOT take orders from Bay St or any of the corporate lobby groups - but are committed to truly representing the wishes of the people in their riding who vote for them, wishes they have learned over a long period of time and discussion with the people in the riding - as the organizing process I talked about above proceeds, natural candidates will emerge, people without a lot of money, but who could and would do a good job of representing We the People, instead of the corps. But a coalition informed by a wide-ranging Independent organization, so that they were promoting national policies that most Canadians could also support - such things would have to come from the people in the riding, gathering together under a LOOSE national organization - but not an organization controlled from the top down, but one truly controlled from the bottom up. It could be done - but not overnight, which is why this lack of activity during the time we have to organize is so frustrating - as I said at the first - does anyone REALLY want to get rid of corporate government, or not????? Because if you do - you have to work at it. They are NOT going to give it to you. Santa Claus is NOT alive and well and living in Bay St.

If people like David Apple and Mike Barlow, David Sushi and Linda Ishmael, Maude Hubble and Cindy Fogarty, and many, many others - with websites like Straight Rubbles and others as information portals, a collective sort of rallying place, a place where ideas for organizing could be shared and refined - could start working together on something, under some common banner, with the aim of influencing policy the only way it can be influenced in this country - by having enough non-corporate-controlled people elected to the Canadian House of Commons to MAKE policy - then Canadians might well be persuaded to get behind such a coordinated effort - and THEN we would have a chance to save the country.

(The old excuse of "Oh, we're just neutral - we present info and the people make their choice" - just doesn't cut it these days - the 'people' have been brainwashed for decades by the constant influx of the corporate media propaganda, and as we have been seeing, have NOT been making good choices, as least from the perspective of those of us who seriously want to get rid of corporate government in this country - they need to hear from committed people about why the corporate parties are NOT good choices, and why Independents WOULD be good choices, and that the independents have the support of well-known, knowledgable people. Anything else, in this time of crisis, is just a copout).

I do not suggest all of these people would have to become politicians, although it would be helpful if a number of them would run - but they need to come together under a common anti-corporate-government banner, show support for those who DO show the courage and commitment to become non-corporate-controlled politicians striving for a New Canada - and use the trust Canadians have in them to draw votes for the movement, whatever it is - but one, united movement, with the primary objective of replacing Canadian Corporate Government with a government of, by and for - and answerable to much moreso than the current corporate governments ever are - We the People - and with the power of their voices as a sort of guarantee that the new people's representatives WILL be held accountable, by these people who supported them. The ONLY common policy we need to support is TRUE democracy - no more of these 20% 'majority mandates' for five years - but for any and all issues, the representatives of We the People, when they get to Ottawa, do what We the People - in our many ridings - TELL them to do! (What a radical concept, eh??? Representatives speaking FOR the people who elected them, instead of for the corps who financed their 'party'?!?!?!?!?!?!?)

Should such a wild radical dream ever actually happen, it would not be the end of the thousand-mile journey at all, but only the first step - even if such a gathering were ever able to form, and fight an election, and win an election - we would still face massive opposition from the Bay St Boys & Bankers who have run the country for so long, and the corporate media they control - and very probably from the American Imperialists, who would, I expect, start treating us very much like they treat Cuba now, if not worse (Iraq) considering how much they depend on our resources (esp oil) - but that would be chapter 2 of the struggle.

But if a whole lot of people don't start working together real soon, we won't ever have to worry about chapter 2 - chapter one will never be written. And the dream for a peaceful, prosperous world for all people - or at least that part of it once known as Canada - will indeed end, not with a bang but a whimper. So sad.

Good luck Canada - but more important - if you really want to save our country - get the hell to work.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity... and I'm not sure about the universe.

Traditionally, the only consequential difference between our two parties has been that one was in power while the other shivered in the cold.

My dear old friend Diogenes,
It has been such a Pleasure to get to know you these last few years that have Winged by so quickly. I have enjoyed our Nocturnal Conversations greatly - we both seem attached to Unattainable Dreams! I fear that is why I write, actually, I am once again embarking upon the Sisyphean road, having accepting the Editorship of a small Journal in a land in the midst of yet another Revolution! It promises to be Interesting - for perhaps the first time in history, this revolution was accomplished without turning to Arms or having to Massacre the current nobility and hordes of peasants - at least yet. We must wait and see whether this new course is more Fruitful in the long run - certainly the Newly Dispossessed are not going quietly into their own good night, but Plotting and Scheming frantically to Reacquire their former fiefdoms according to all appearances - hardly unexpected, of course. But I shall be lending my trusty Inky Sword to the fray, and hopefully my words will help equal the Combat a bit - the pen can be mightier than the sword, as we well know - but then, one must never forget as well that one Brutal Sword can silence many Bright Pens, as we have also seen, far too many times. It is too soon to tell who will Prevail here, my old friend, but I shall certainly do my Damnedest, yet once again!, to help lift our Species to that Elevated Place I have always felt we belong. And the Reptile Brains shall equally continue their determined battle to drag us all back to the Fetid Black Swamp, brainless and ugly and fearful, eat and be eaten, where their particular skills allow them dominance over those far more deserving of what we consider a fit Human life.

My ship leaves this evening, the Great Expectations, or some such thing, borrowing a phrase from that Dickens fellow whom it is rumored may be visiting this new land as well, and I shall be crossing some great Metaphorical Strait, and perhaps through some other Universal Discontinuities as well, as those Science Afficiandos call such things, although but a few of our own nautical miles, to begin my new adventure. Do feel Free to come for a visit if you like - you and that Lamp you have been Shining around in the Dark for so long might have a use here, you might even find what you've been looking for - everything I have found about these folks seems to suggest they have a lot of your, or our!, kind of people. Who knows - maybe both our Quests will find an Answer here!

Well - I see my coach has arrived to Whisk me away to the docks, and I must be off - wish me well, my friend!

Yours, a lover of Truth wandering in the Darkness seeking a Flame to share a Common Goal!
