Editor, Open letter to Shawn Murphy, MP, Hillsborough: I just thought I had better add my voice to the growing chorus opposing the so-called war in Iraq - you must surely be aware in your own heart that the reasons offered by the American government are totally inadequate for justifying such an invasion, and that, if it happens, it will be much more in the nature of a slaughter than a “war”. I understand how difficult it is for the Canadian government to resist the pressure from the American government (oh for the days of Trudeau, who had the guts to stand up to these barbarians!), but there are times when difficult things must be done, and this is one of those times. To participate in this completely indefensible butchery would shame this country for generations, and make us a pariah to the rest of the world, as the US is already becoming - that is how civilised people regard butchers. The bottom line here seems to be that the US is preparing to invade a basically defenceless country and spend hundreds of billions of dollars killing thousands or tens of thousands of innocent civilians and causing countless billions of dollars in damage to the infrastructure of that country because, in essence, the leader of that country is thumbing his nose at them. And we call ourselves civilised? Mmm-hmmm. As a great philosopher (Calvin) once said - “The surest sign of intelligent life in the universe is that they haven’t contacted us yet.” As a citizen of your riding in Prince Edward Island, I am telling you that, as my representative in the Canadian parliament, I do NOT want my country participating in this proposed American invasion of Iraq and it is my strongest desire that you vote against any such move by this country - and should you eventually support it (if the PM even lets you vote) I would ask that you please register at the same time my strongest disapproval. At some point in the future, hopefully, if we survive this dangerous time, the true history of what is happening today will be written - and the current government of the United States is not going to look very good. Please try to ensure that the role of Canada at this time is something more honourable than sycophant of what will surely be written about as one of the most evil and corrupt governments in history. Thank you for your time - |
